Course Description

The TOEFL test is recognized globally as proof of an individual’s advanced level of English proficiency and can afford life-changing opportunities to those whom wish to study or work in the US or abroad, where English is native.   ULI’s TOEFL Test Preparation course will give you the tools you need to master the necessary techniques, strategies, and formatting for success in the TOEFL exam.   Course content and classroom/ homework applications will include practice with advanced vocabulary development, note-taking skills, detailed academic reading and listening comprehension, comprehensive step-by-step procedures and templates for the speaking and writing tasks, phonology improvement, and a broad range of TOEFL individual question-based techniques for task simplification, among others.

Specific Objectives

After completing this course, the student should be able to:

  • Recognize the complete structure of the TOEFL test and how it is scored.
  • Identify and utilize the strategies and techniques for quick, accurate, and successful completion of the reading and listening sections.
  • Master the format and step-by-step techniques for accurate and successful completion of the writing and speaking sections
  • Foster the confidence in creative thinking skills and topic development through classroom-based applications on independent writing and speaking tasks.
  • Develop an abundance of new vocabulary and critical thinking skills for the purpose of making sound decisions during the test.
  • Fully complete a TEOFL test within the allotted time through a final proctored practice test.

Course Goal

To learn, develop and apply the advanced grammatical, vocabulary, reading, listening, and independent/integrated speaking and writing strategies and techniques to achieve high-level TOEFL test scores.

Course Objective

Fundamental teaching of TOEFL/AWL vocabulary, test-taking techniques and strategies, selection-approaches, and connections among the TOEFL test sections through weekly lecturing, in-class assessments, homework assignments, and formal testing procedures will take place.

Student Learning Outcome

Can effectively comprehend, explain and ultimately demonstrate high-intermediate to advanced abilities utilizing the TOEFL reading, listening, speaking and writing strategies and techniques learned in course subject areas during timed TOEFL exercises, quizzes, and formal assessments.

About the Program Director
Professor David Lesser

Professor David Lesser is an experienced instructor with more than 15 years in the field of ESL teaching and specialized English training services, including but not limited to: TOEFL, IETLS, Cultural Adaptation and Vocabulary, Academic Preparation, and Professional Pronunciation/Accent Development.   He has held the position of ESL Director at Unilatina International College since 2007 and has worked privately since 2008.  Professor Lesser graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in Linguistics and holds a university specialization in ESL Studies/TESOL.

For the better part of the last two decades, professor Lesser’s passion for teaching and guiding others has facilitated in hundreds of students fulfilling their personal and professional goals.  His constant desire to discover more effective and simplified methodologies in teaching English to non-native learners has helped to define the professional instructor he is today.
